This route leaves Bergamo in the direction
of Lecco and then along the lake, heading towards Val
Bregaglia, across the Passo del Maloja (Maloja Pass)
and up to Engadina; St. Moritz and the Passo del
Bernina; crossing the Swiss National Park, the Val
Monastero and then back into Italy towards Bormio, Tirano,
Aprica, Edolo, Darfo Boario, Lovere
and then back to Bergamo.
A sequence of passes and valleys, curves and hairpin
bends. A magnificent route that leaves from Lombardy, enters
Switzerland to travel through the Engadina and Muestair
valleys and then crosses back into Italy.
From Lecco, with its tree-lined lake front,
it heads to Colico and the historical town of Chiavenna,
before reaching the Marmitte dei Giganti park, with its natural
potholes formed by the erosion of glaciers and creeks. Then back
on the highway towards Piuro, with spectacular views of the
Acqua Fraggia waterfall.
Here we cross the border into the Val Bregaglia
with its granite mountains, heading towards the east point
and onto the Passo del Maloja, where the road is feathered
with a number of sharp bends before it reaches the Engadina
plateau. From here we head in the direction of St. Moritz
on the edge of Lake Silvaplana, which is well worth a stop.
We then continue up to Pontresina, which
offers wonderful views of Bernina, before heading on towards
Bormio, where we can take a pleasant break at the baths before
heading out again, deep into the fabulous mountain scenery towards
Sondalo, Madonna di Tiranno, Edolo, Capo
di Ponte and on to Val Camonica, where visitors can marvel
at the remarkable rock inscriptions; we then move on to Boario
Terme, Castione and Lovere before finally arriving
back in Bergamo, where our journey ends.
